I climb back into Beau’s truck and fasten the seat belt. We’ve barely said two words to each other since leaving the exam room, but the silence isn’t uncomfortable. More like we’re both lost in our train of thoughts. I try to think of something to say to break the silence but come up empty. Thankfully, Beau doesn’t seem to have the same problem.
“Do you want to call your mom and tell her? Or should we plan one of those gender reveals and tell everyone then?”
“We already know the gender, though.”
“True, but they don’t.”
“Would it be awkward for my mother to come? Given the history?”
He weighs his answer before shaking his head. “No. I mean, life happens, ya know? And I’m not happy with what she and Jim did, but it brought you into my life so I can’t exactly hate them for it anymore, either. Besides, it’s not the only time I’m going to see your mom.”
“She’s going to flip when she finds out.”
“She knows you’re pregnant, though?”
“Yeah, but I might have left out one little detail to her.”
“What little detail would that be?”
“The one where you’re the father.”
“Oh, shit. Well, you might want to tell her that before the party.”
I nod my head. “Yeah. I’ll call her tonight and tell her.”
My phone dings with an incoming text and I pull it from my purse to check.
Blake: Mail finally came. Do you and Beau want to come for dinner?
I glance at Beau and read the message to him. “Sure,” he says.
Me: Yes. Can’t wait!
I go ahead and text my mother to let her know I’ll be calling this afternoon and that the doctor’s appointment went great. When I’m done, I toss my phone back into my purse. I’ve started a mental list of things I need to start working on before the babies arrive.
Yesterday, I only had to plan for one child, and now it’s doubled. First on my list is finding a place to live. The room at Beau’s is great for me, but I don’t think it’ll work with two curious toddlers. Granted, I have a few months before I deliver and a little longer after that before they are crawling or walking, but I’d like to find something sooner rather than later. Some place I can settle into and call home.
Something the doctor asked during my appointment triggered another item for my list. I desperately need to find out as much medical history as I can. I have all of my mother’s information and most of my own, but Beau doesn’t even know his family, so how the hell am I supposed to gather his? It should be simple enough to find out Jim’s, and that at least will fill in the rest of mine.
“Do you have any medical history on Jim?” I ask Beau as he turns in the driveway.
“Nothing formal, but I’m sure we could dig it up if you wanted to. As far as I knew, he was healthy as a horse, but then he went and had a heart attack.
